New Spinal Robotics Procedure Shortening Surgical Time and Healing Time
KTSM News Channel, February 20, 2013
ORLANDO, Fla., April 5, 2013 – The Department of Neurological Surgery at University of California, Irvine performed the first successful lumbar spine fusion using Mazor Robotics (TASE:MZOR) Renaissance™ in conjunction with BodyTom®, an intraoperative imaging system by NeuroLogica.
NeuroLogica’s BodyTom is a completely portable, full-body CT that boasts an 85cm gantry and 60cm field of view. Renaissance works with BodyTom to provide the surgeon with the ability to plan the surgical procedure using the intra-operative CT image.
“We plan to continue to be at the forefront of spine surgery offering procedures that deliver quality and accuracy,” said Dr. Delashaw, Chairman of Neurological Surgery at University of California Irvine. The University of California, Irvine Medical Center is a world-class academic medical center and the only university hospital in Orange County.
The patient has been released from the hospital and is recovering very well after a fusion from the T12 vertebrae to the sacrum. Fusions may help correct chronic back pain – a condition that 31 million Americans suffer from, according to the American Association of Neurologic Surgeons.
“Compatibility of the Mazor Robotics Renaissance with leading imaging products is important to our customers,” said Ori Hadomi, CEO of Mazor Robotics. “So while surgeons can still use CT scanners for preoperative planning, they can also use intraoperative CTs, such as BodyTom, which are quickly gaining popularity.”

First Minimally Invasive Brain Surgery Using Mazor Robotics Renaissance™ in USA
Yahoo! News, March 21, 2013
Grand Rapids, MI (PRWEB) March 21, 2013
Neurosurgeon Dr. John Winestone of Great Lakes Neurosurgical Associates P.C., recently performed the first robot guided minimally invasive brain surgery in the United States using the Mazor Robotics Renaissance™. The surgery was conducted at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The Renaissance robotic system provides preoperative planning tools, 3D virtual imaging and intraoperative precision guidance robotics, helping surgeons target and reach tissues to be biopsied or removed in surgery. Until now, Renaissance has only been used in the United States to assist in spine surgery. Renaissance is used in Europe for both spine and brain surgery.
Prior to a Renaissance surgery, a patient undergoes radiology studies to help map the surgical path for instruments. The robot is then mounted to the patient’s spine or skull, images are taken to ensure precise placement and surgery is performed. The system provides pinpoint accuracy in removing tissue from the brain or implanting devices into the spine. Patient benefits include fewer incisions, increased surgical accuracy and safety, reduced x-ray exposure and shorter hospital stays.
Dr. John Winestone, a partner with Great Lakes Neurosurgical Associates P.C., and on staff at Metro Health, is one of only two surgeons in the United States trained to use Renaissance for brain surgery.
“I’m excited about the use of new technology in the operating room,” he said. “The Renaissance increases accuracy and moving forward may allow for less invasive stereotactic and functional procedures, such as precision biopsy. The less invasive technique is more gentle and much easier for patients.”
Great Lakes Neurosurgical Associates P.C. (GLNA), based in Grand Rapids, has brought advanced neurosurgical care to West Michigan patients and hospitals for over 35 years. They advocate for patient choice and have been early adopters of new medical technologies within their practice.
“As a collaborative, multi-disciplinary health practice committed to making the best decisions concerning each patient’s welfare, we are continually seeking out ways to improve patient outcomes, giving them the opportunity to live healthier, more productive lives,” said Dr. Lynn Hedeman, practicing neurosurgeon and GLNA founding partner. “New procedures and technologies are one of the many ways in which we continue to provide leading neurosurgical care to our patients and their primary care providers.”
Future expectations for the Renaissance include use for deep brain stimulation of patients with epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease, and to improve patient positioning during surgery. About Great Lakes Neurosurgical Associates, P.C.
GLNA is an independent, physician-owned medical practice, providing advanced adult and pediatric neurosurgical care to patients for over 35 years. GLNA is located near downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan and serves patients from Michigan, the Midwest, and the greater U.S.A.
